BE 2012 - After migration, storage pools but no storage devices
Migrated our BE 2012 server using the steps in the article below. We moved from a Win2K8 R2 Enterprise OS to Win2K8 R2Standard OS for licensing reasons. Everything seemed to migrate successfully except for the storage devices which are simply network drives/shares. In the BE console on the new BE server, the storage pools, that were on the old BE server, are there and the properties of the storage pools show the related storage devices. The problem is that the storage devices do not show up as individual devices on the storage tab of the BE console, so I cannot edit the properties or even use them with the migrated backup jobs. I tried renaming the old BE server and taking it offline, then renaming the new BE server to the old BE server name, but I could not log into BE using the old or new name after that. I put the new name back into place so now I'm back at square one again. I thought about just configuring new storage devices with new names but I'm concerned about how that will affect my ability to restore existing backed up data that is on these drives. Ideally, I would like to get some help on how I can get this migrated BE server to recognize the storage devices again. https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH129826.html Thank You, RA907Views0likes3CommentsThe job failed with the following error

I have a large disk storage that I do my backup to disk on then from there, backup to tape. I have an expiration date of 5 days. Question, what program does this cleanup and why does it work sometime and not other times?? Also, is there a place that you can set this program to run (specific date)? Thanks much CathySolved2.3KViews1like9CommentsBackup exec does not delete old jobs
Hi, I have this problem from time to time in about every version of backup exec I can think of over the years. From time to time, backup exec sends an alert saying to free space on the disk where it is backing up. So I have to manually delete the old .bkf files, even though the job is configured like this; Backup to a NAS, in the last case I had this problem, this NAS receives 1 backup per week, full, 2 servers backed up, 3 jobs in total (sql, exchange, data) Job is configured to keep for 2 days I would delete all the content of the directory where the backup is made, leaving only the 2 .cfg files. Then I would have a full wich will work, then next week when the second full would start, after a while, the job would still run until there is no free space (as I remember). So I manually delete the files of the first backup, go in alerts, respond to it, and the backup would countinue. This kind of problem happens from time to time, in about every type of configuration (we have multiple clients), to clients randomly. It seems that most of the time, it would delete old backups by itself, sometimes it does not, I have to do it manually. the only thing I could think of is when a problem appears during the backup and it does not complete, those .bkf files will not be deleted and over time, with other errors, these grow and take more and more space and are not deleted by backup exec automatically. We always use removable storage. Maybe there is a setting I did not see somewhere or something I must do to make sure that backup exec will delete old job as needed to free space. Any guidance would be appreciated. ThanksSolved5.9KViews1like9CommentsBackup Exec job design duplicate jobs
Hi everyone, In the last 10 years I used different Backup Exec Version up to BE 2010 R3. Now I am in a new Backup Project with Backup Exec 15 and I'm a bit shocked about the changes of the version form 2010R3 to 15... What I need to do is simple: I want to backup 20 virtual machines (virtual-based backup) to disk and then duplicate to tape with 3 different media sets (weekly, monthly, yearly). Do I really need to design 3 Backup Definitions for that? Because it seams that I can't define different duplicate jobs in one stage of the same Backup definition... The most stupid thing is, if I really need to define 3 backup definitions for that, I need to re-select the 20machines manually 3 times because it does not keep the vm selections if I select the option "Create a New Backup Using Settings from existing Backup". How are you guys doing this? Thanks for your advices! Best regards,Solved3KViews0likes5CommentsBackup remote server to remote tape drive (BackupExec 12 / 2010)
Hi All, I had a look around but could not find a simple yes/no answer to this question. Basically I have a server in a datacenter with an attached tape library that I would like to back up with Backup Exec. I also have a server in our office which backs up the mail, AD and etc.. to a smaller tape drive.. I change this tape every day. I would like to setup BE on the server in our office to backup the email and etc.. to the locally attached tape drive. I would then like to have seperate jobs which backup the server in the datacenter to the tape library (which is attached to that server, not the main media server) using the remote agent. Is this possible, or must all tape devices be attached to the media server (in which case I need to seperate installs of Backup Exec to give me a media server in the data center and a media server in the office)? Currently running BE 12.0 with plans to upgrade to 2010 soon. Thanks!Solved2.2KViews0likes5CommentsBackup Exec 2014 duplicate backup sets without encryption?
Hi, As above really! We are backing up our servers using BE definedpassphrase (256 bit AES encryption) on our LTO5/6 drives. We are going to start supporting an external company and rather than dedicate separate media sets (And tapes)to this company what we want to do is the following: Setup their jobs to append to our tapes using our current encryption key In the extremely unlikely scenario that they want a copy of their backups I do not want to give them our tapes (Just incase they get into our data). So what I want to do is duplicate their backup sets onto an unencrypted tape. When I select a backup set and select the Duplicate option there is an option about encryption which Symantec mentions can be used to encrypt unencrypted backup sets. It also mentions that if a different encryption key is specified only unencrypted data will be encrypted with this key. So I am wondering if I select no encryption will it simply make an encrypted copy, or will it make an unencrypted copy?Solved1.5KViews0likes4Commentsis backup over WAN worth considering?
Provided my calculation of data transfer shows that it's "doable" within 3 hours everyday. I was considering this before I was presented with Symantec BE14. Now my partner is talking about 2 BE servers with dedupe on each side and other license options that would be required, not to mention hardware, etc. It's way over original budget and I'm not sure BE is really built for this. I mean, it's one thing if I raise the budget and the solution works, but quite another if it turns out to be an expensive pile of doodoo..1.4KViews0likes3Comments
