Please help on this.

  • keep below entry in tools.conf of VM and restart the vmware tools services from service.msc of the VM and then try the backups

    [vmbackup]
    vss.disableAppQuiescing = true

    location of tools.conf in VM

    C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Tools\tools.conf

  • I'm shocked that I see "certified" marked next to your username.

    Whats the operating system of the VM? Have VMware tools been installed and are they up to date? If its a Windows client, have you checked status of VSS writers?

    Status 156 can refer to a number of things, here are a couple of pointers:

    https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.HOWTO70949

    https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.TECH160314

    https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.000023402

    https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1018194

  • VM tools are installed and up to date.

    VSS writers status are also fine.

  • keep below entry in tools.conf of VM and restart the vmware tools services from service.msc of the VM and then try the backups

    [vmbackup]
    vss.disableAppQuiescing = true

    location of tools.conf in VM

    C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Tools\tools.conf

  • You forgot to tell us which OS on the failing VM? Which ESX /vCenter version? What applications are running on this VM? Any RDM disks on the VM? Can you take a snapshot from vSphere client? Have you checked VM logs while snapshot is attempted during backup?
