Did a catalogue restore, but seem to have missing information.

So I did a catalogue restore (full one) which honestly I felt went sideways. It said it finished partially but the only errors I could find were IOC_CHFLAG_SET errors.

I had my profiles, on the file system the DB was backup to it's 375GB range. So I assumed all the data was loaded.

When I login to the JavaGUI, ALL my volume pools are gone ALL my tapes are in 1 pool now. Is this normal? Because on the old system We had volume pools for each job which had tapes in it (We don't backup daily, we archive data so it goes on tape once and that's it so I believe that's why they used volume pools when they set it up ages ago). Either way.

It just feels to me like I'm missing Data, and I'm not sure what to do now. I've opened a ticket but I'm running out of hours I can say "it's good let's test" vs "we need to roll back" (Let's just say it's been a long week getting to this point).

  • netbackup has again provided the migrator tool.(it used to be there, was removed and now it is back in the veritas support portal)you can use the migrator and it will help you to achieve what you want.
as you mentioned the DR restoration was not completed successfully, something failed, and thats why you are seeing it so complicated.

  • I'd be very concerned if all the media has moved to one pool ... That sounds to me like you did an inventory of a robot and it's discovered them as new empty media...

Do not test backup before you have tested restore as any backup activity could result in media overwrite.

When you did catalog restore was that as part of a catalog recovery or just a restore using the bar interface?  As it sounds like you may have restored only flat files and not the the relational database.

When doing a catalog recovery you would also have needed to tell it to use the DR recovery package.  Also it would have to be to a master with the SAME name.

If you wanted to rename as part of a replatforming or hardware refresh you can achieve it with Tranzman (this is a 3rd party software solution for catalog migrations which Stone Ram developed)

Not sure if the nbsm tool supports 10.3 that is a Veritas too for server migration, that could be another option but it only supports same name migrations (I think).

Yeah it's a hardware refresh. I used the JavaGUI but like I said it complained. And eventually left my system broken. 4 hours support call later we finally got into it, and then when I realized this is weird. I've reopened a ticket but I'm getting down to the wire of a roll back scenario.

I have never in 28 years had a hardware refresh be SO complicated lol.

the new hosts are named the exact same. I literally just want to refresh six year old hardware.

Would reloading the data again be worth a shot? Maybe this time from the CLI?

Or is there another method to achieve what I want.

  • Of course, it is wrong not to have identical NetBackup environments after the restore.
I suppose you are using the same NetBackup version for both installations.

What version of NetBackup are you using?
What do you want to accomplish with this catalog restore?
Just asking, as Veritas support would be the way to go.

If it is not a disaster recovery but a hardware refresh, there are other ways to move NetBackup apart catalog backup/restore

Netbckup version on both sides is 10.3

This is indeed a hardware refresh. And Using a catalogue restore method was suggested to me. But now I'm seeing this isn't exactly what I want.

You mention others ways, is this the "rsync the old version over a same fresh install version" kind of job, cause that was also suggested (but felt very brute force, but I can see how it would work).

I'd LOVE to hear of another way to migrate these 2 servers to new hardware. Cause I'm running out of time :(
