Data migration for LTR images of 3 clients

we are currently planning to migrate existing and future LTR images of 3 of our clients from Datadomain to Netbackup appliance. To facilitate these migration, i would appreciate your assistance with the following:

Size check: could you please guide how to check the total size of LTR images for the last 7 years of all 3 clients

Storage Requirement: Additionally, i would like to understand if the same amount of storage will be needed on the Netbackup appliance, or if additional space will be required due to any potential changes in storage efficiency or other factors

  • You don't want to store 7 years of backup images on dedupe storage.

The sweet spot for deupe storage is appx 2 weeks to 1 year.

You can setup SLP to move backup images from dedupe storage to tape.

For already created images not under SLP, control you will have to duplicate those manually.

  • Hi ,
not sure if you are on netbackup 10.4 , but they have introduced msdpimgutil spacereport  for calculating the space used by clients.
now most probably you are not on 10.4 but thought to share it anyway :)

  • Hello

In current dedup world to estimate the numbers you are looking for, I would have to have my crystal ball back - which is already broken for years ;).

In other words - it will be hard to get these numbers without really running this migration, as a lot of factors are unknown, ie. what was the change rate on each client with each its backup, how that data is deduping etc.

What I would do, is to duplicate for one backup client the data to NBA and checked for each backup image its dedup rate - if the NBA is already populated with data I think even the very 1st backup will have a better dedup than 0 %. With very next backup images this number will be higher and higher. Then do it for 2nd and 3rd client. Observe you disk pool usage.

That's my two cents to this thread.
