EV Vault Cache settings

Hi

I have a couple of questions on Vault Cache I want to ask to get a better feel for the functionality and to check if my understanding is correct.

The MDC (metadata cache file) contains what can loosely be described as the item shortcut? It contains the metadata of the message and the start of the content - correct? Is this based on the shortcut content as specified in the archiving policy (eg the first 500 characters) or is it a fixed number of characters regardless of what the shortcut body is defined as within the archiving policy?

Should a user set an age limit of say 1 year for the download content, does the MDC file contain the metadata for the entire users archive but there is a separate 'content file' that will download the content for only the most recent years worth of archived items?  When items in the content file become older than 1 year are they automatically removed?

If a 1GB limit is set for the size of the Vault Cache - does this only apply to the content file or is it the combined size of the MDC file AND the content file? and if a 1GB limit is set, is there an easy way to determine the date of the oldest file in the users Vault Cache. I assume that as new content is synchronised, the oldest content is deleted to stay within the same 1GB limit?

I understand the MDC can be 'renamed' to PST and viewed as a PST file? Does the same apply to the 'content file' - are the message items contained within this file readable should this file be compromised?

many thanks in advance.

  • Hello,

    MDC File Content:
The MDC file contains the item header information and folder structure, which can be seen as the item shortcut. It includes metadata of the message and a snippet of the content. This snippet is typically a fixed number of characters, not necessarily based on the archiving policy’s shortcut content.
    Age Limit for Download Content:
If a user sets an age limit (e.g., 1 year) for the download content, the MDC file will still contain metadata for the entire user’s archive. The content file, however, will only download the content for the most recent year’s worth of archived items. Items older than 1 year in the content file are automatically removed as per the set age limit.
    Vault Cache Size Limit:
The 1GB limit for the Vault Cache applies to the combined size of both the MDC file and the content file2. As new content is synchronized, the oldest content is deleted to stay within the 1GB limit. There isn’t a direct way to determine the date of the oldest file in the Vault Cache, but the system manages the space by removing the oldest content first.
    Viewing MDC and Content Files:
The MDC file can indeed be renamed to PST and viewed as a PST file in Outlook. However, this does not apply to the content file. The content file contains full messages and attachments, but it is not directly readable if compromised.

    Best Regards
