Backup Exec Hangs Discovering Resources

Problem:

I have been using Backup Exec for about two years, I had to setup our Backups from scratch for our project. I am running  2012 servers on physical machines and ESXi 5.5 and Windows 7 machines. The backup server is a physical machine attached to a LTO6 autoloader and a MSA. When I first set up our backups, I was using Backup Exec 14 and have now upgraded to 15.

I have had problems with jobs getting stuck on Discovering Resources while using 14 and now on 15 as well. I did a lot of research and even contacted Symantec support but I was not able to fix the issue in an easie manner. I have untistalled Backup Exec three times and I have removed the agent on target machines multiple times while troubleshooting this issue.  I tried restarting the services, rebuilding the database, restoring database, etc. with no luck.

Solution:

In my case, I discovered that when a job hangs on Discovering Resources it is due to the servers (Windows 7 machines) I am trying to backup. When I open the Backup Definitions Properties window, Backup Exec tries to connect to all the servers but it is not successful. I have found that if Backup Exec cannot connect to all of the mahinces while trying to edit the job selections, the jobs will hang. I tired removing the problem machines from the job and adding them again but that did not work. Restarting the target machines sometimes will resolve the problem but in some cases I had to remove the agent and install it again to get them to connect. I have also removed the trust relationship on the traget machines and established the relationship from the server which has worked a few times.

I am not sure what causes the problem but I am guessing it has to do with DNS. The machines I have problems with are on DHCP. I am unsure what causes the issue but I am sure glad I can restore connectivity in a fairly quick manner.

I hope this helps..

Today one of my jobs got stuck discovering resources... I tried the fixes I have mentioned on original post but nothing seemed to work. The backup job is for SQL databases which are in production so I could not restart the target machines. instead, after playing around with the agent services on the target machines, i discovered a different solution.

first, I opened the Symantec Backup Exec Agent Utility and removed the entries under the publishing tab and all the entries under the security tab. then I closed the utility window and terminated the process. I also restarted the Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows under services.

after the Remote Agent had started, I went to the Backup Exec Server and right-clicked the target machine and selected Establish Trust. After the trust had been established, I restarted the job and it just completed successfully!!
